Can Generator Noise Damage Your Hearing?
By the HearMax Centre team

Generator noise is so normal in Nigeria that most people have stopped hearing it. It runs during the evening power gap, at celebrations, behind shops and inside workshops — and because everyone lives with it, nobody thinks of it as a health risk.
It is one.
How loud is generator noise, really?
A typical petrol or diesel generator running a few metres away produces sound in the region of 85–100 decibels — the zone where hearing damage begins to accumulate. The dangerous thing about generator noise is not one afternoon of it. It is the years of it: an hour here, an evening there, thousands of hours over a lifetime.
Hazardous noise is not only about volume, it is about volume and time. As a practical rule: if you must raise your voice to be understood by someone an arm's length away, the noise level around you is doing damage.
The early signs
Noise damage arrives gradually, which is exactly why people ignore it:
- Ringing in the ears after exposure that fades by the next morning — for now
- Muffled hearing that recovers overnight
- Difficulty following conversations in noisy places
- Asking people to repeat themselves more often
- The television volume creeping up
The ringing that used to fade overnight is the warning. Eventually it may not fade at all, and hearing lost to noise does not grow back.
Who is most at risk
- People who run or sit near generators for long periods — shop owners, technicians, security personnel
- Events staff and sound engineers
- Anyone living or working within a few metres of a running generator for hours a day
- People who add earphone volume on top of the generator noise
What you can do
- Increase distance. Halving your distance from a noise source roughly doubles its intensity. Moving a few metres away matters.
- Reduce exposure time where you can — rotate tasks, step away during long runs.
- Use hearing protection — earplugs are cheap and fit in a pocket.
- Get a baseline hearing test before symptoms show up, so you and your audiologist have something to compare against later.
That last step is the one most people skip — and the one that gives you information while change is still small.
